I really wanna start some martial art for battering someone and mainly fitness purposes.

well I was with you until the rugged looks part........ I think you should take up MMA then because your allowed elbows and front kicks etc. obviously there are still rules against certain moves but its not backyard brawls lol. brazilian ju jitsu is just as impressive as muay thai and brutal stand up, put them together and you have..... well, anderson silva. lol

Lolll.. There was this old school Brazilian Ju Jitsu guy... Leo... something... he's a black guy... Fuck his ground work was amazing... tried to teach me... but he had tournements over in brazil... he won the Cage Rage stuff in the uk or something like that... but he showed me that my ground work needs a lot of work!!! "Tying your hands behind your back... now everytime I get you in a lock you must roll with it and slip out... learn to do it this way and then you can imagine what will happen when you use your hands"

top level ju jitsu generally takes around 5-7 years of dedication to get to a good level of blackbelt, and even then ppl could still submit you, depending on the teachers etc. but decent ground game will get you far in the smaller shows like cage rage etc. because you won't need it too much if you got good stand up and take down defence.

See I never really followed MMA much... Certain matches just got really boring... where 2 big hefty guys just cuddle on the floor for ages... I like the K-1... Pride wasn't too bad...
I learn Silat too... which is deadly in its ground stuff... it's not about submission... it's about tearing the next guys head off... You see... the "problem" with the south asian martial arts is that they're built for the battle field... countries that were under constant attack by neighbouring countries and pirates... they needed methods to dispatch of their opponents quick! But again.. not ring safe

well your never really going to need those 'battle field' arts, as now we have guns, and therefore contact sport is now looked upon as an art and not brutality. which is why MMA is the best, it pits the best of the best against each other and forces you to learn other forms of martial arts, and a weakness in one will generally mean a loss against top tier oponents.

there are some boring fights but most of the time when they go to ground it's quite interesting, especially if its a ju jitsu guy, if you learn about it you will love as I was the same when I first started watching it years back, in fact everyone I know was like that until they learned about all the arts.
