did mine last year, have to do another this year.. my adivce:

1. read ahead, continuous reading, u can never read enough for it
2. PLAN
3. Start now, think of your topic, get reading, planning, making notes..
4. DON'T write it up in the final week like i did.. Everyone says "yeah that always happens it gels in the final two weeks and u'll get it done then only" but no, i dont agree, If i could do it again I would definitely begin writing from say christmas time.. big big mistake, gonna make sure I dont make the same one this year.
5. WIDER reading, go to different uni libraries, UCLAN was really good, so is lancaster uni library... its amazing the stuff u can find..
6. stay focused on a certain topic rather than trying to cover too many topics.. It's easier and u definitely get more marks if u handle less genres, texts, topics, issues and write more, rather than writing loads on loadsa different things..
7. Coherence!! always go back to your project proposal and ur introduction, make sure ur not drifting off course..
8. Manage your time effectively, the dissertation is usually submitted towards the end of the year and so students tend to think i'll start focusing on it after my other assignments are all done n dusted.. nuh uh, doesn't help at all.. similarly dont spend too much time on ur dissertation thinking its worth more and so less time on other assignments.. an accumulation of 6 small essays is probably worth more than One big fat massive dissertation, and probably more easier to boost your marks up on.
9. TUTORIALS!! if theres any individual or group tutorials for it, GO TO THEM, and make sure ur continuously seeking guidance n support.. I only had one five minute tutorial and man omg it did not work wonders let me tell u that!!!
10. DISCUSS with other class mates, get ideas, bounce of each other, help each other out with research.. I knwo u have loads of ur own to do but if u see something interesting say in a newspaper which is about a topic that someone else is doin in class cut it out for them and give it em.. u'll soon find people doing the same for u, and u need all the extra stuff u can get..
11. keep it MODERN and FRESH.. u want to make ur work sound like its hot off the press, that's the whole point of doing a research project.. u have to make theories argue, disagree, debate, be controversial if u have to... remember ur researching to find out something new which people have not really read or thought of.. the last thing u want is ur tutor hearing 10,000 words of something he knows back to front and inside out.. it has to keep him/her interested and make em want to read on!! (believe me it's very hard to do that)
12. authentic and good educational sites. make sure all ur info is off good academic reliable websites.. dont get it off sites that have the ~ symbol in the URL, these tend to be personal websites and often personal opinions, theyre ok to read, but dont reference or quote from any tom dick n harry site.. try n get sites that end in .edu or .gov or what have ya.

I think it depends on the course, cos i did a project based 1 which ended up bein bout 150 pages long, whereas some poeple did it thru text books and journals & had a dissertation which was like 250 pages long

And leading on from wot Seeya_a said, make sure u reference all ur material, cos plagiarism is a big issue, as u would already know!!!

yes they've introduced loadsa new rules this year... yikes... Choppy u'll be ayt, it sounds so scary at the start yeah, 10,000 words but once u've got something that interests u it all kinda flows on from there if u keep on top of it :)

Hi, i got the material from a range of sources, online journals + magazines, websites, loadsa books, newspaper reviews, articles, audio interviews, written interviews (if anyone wants all her interviews read "conversations with maya angelou")... and loads more stuff..
