The Indian Air Force (भारतीय वायु सेना : Bharatiya Vayu Sena)
is the air-arm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airforce) of the Armed Forces of India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armed_Forces_of_India) and has the prime responsibility of conducting air-based warfare and securing Indian airspace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airspace). It was established on October 8 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_8), 1932 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1932) as the Indian Air Force. It was granted the prefix "Royal" in 1945 in recognition of its services during the Second World War. The prefix Royal was dropped after India (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India) became a Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic) in 1950 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1950). It is the fourth largest air force in the world.
