BJP MP Babubhai Katara was arrested at the IGI Airport here on charges of cheating, forgery and impersonation after he allegedly tried to take a woman and her teenage son to Canada on the diplomatic passports of his wife and son.

The BJP immediately suspended Katara from the party after his arrest. “He has been suspended from the party on directions of the Leader of the Opposition and the party chief. A show-cause notice is also being sent to him," Vijay Kumar Malhotra, the deputy leader of the BJP in the Lok Sabha said.
The notice asks Katara to explain within 10 days the circumstances under which he was arrested, party sources said.
The party has launched an internal inquiry into the episode that has threatened to bring negative publicity to the party in the midst of the crucial UP assembly polls.
Fortysix-year-old Katara, a second-term MP representing Dahod (ST) constituency in Panchmahal district of Gujarat, was detained by the police following a complaint from immigration officials at the airport when he came along with Paramjeet Kaur and her son Amarjeet, who were posing as his wife Sharadaben and son Rajesh, to take an Air India flight to Toronto in the morning.
The fraud was detected at the boarding gate by Air India staff who objected that the photographs did not match with the ones in the passports.
