Default A World of Pain

Did anyone watch this yesterday on BBC2 (I think)?

Meera Syal was discussing the issue of how Asian women top the ethnic graduates league but on the other hand, they are the ethnic group that self-harm the most?

A particular part interested me; what she said and what was repeated in a different way by her own daughter, it was something along the lines:

"You can never stay young in this world, kids want to be adults fast and leave little time to appreciate the innoncence and lack of conforming."

Now ain't that the truth? I can see it myself these days. Young asian women wanting to "act" like adults and seem to be in a rush to impress and be accepted as "outspoken", "non-backward" and "different" people.

Reality is it's not going to do them any good. The argument is that "it's my body, my choice, I do what I want". But when it starts effecting others around you then you better fix up look sharp? Or not?

Of course this can be applied to young asian males as well, but the TV program was about asian females so I followed suite.

I don't think the program was about young asian women. I think she just used the headline as a starting point to delve into self-harming. Programme was very interesting and insightful.

As for your point on wanting to act like an adult too early, you have a point but I think you went off track there with the outspoken, non-backward thing. There's nothing wrong with being that at any age as long as your intelligent about it and it's natural and your not doing it to conform. I'm not saying we should let kids run around pregnant and depressed and stuff. Just that being a young asian woman and acting like an adult is not always bad. Depends what their perception of 'adult' is.

But the thing is those that are like that "aren't" intelligent about it? Heh.

Yeh, the program didn't just focus on Asian Woman. Was an interesting program none-the-less!

Don't think I went off on a tangent because its linked closely to "growing" up and is bad if one's character is at stake, but thats just my opinion.

Theres loads of people on this forum that this thread should apply to, yet they're chup-chaap. LoL. Reply bitches.

I haven't seen it

but i agree with what Guji said if people are outspoken so what? It don't mean there out there fucking around getting pregnant their outspoken cuz they want to be maybe they have reasons to be outspoken.. and if they have the confidence to do it then who cares? if they make a prat of themself its their loss.. but if their also outspoken it can be their gain also if someone sees something in them a potential empolyer or someone.

Anyways about the whole growing up point..
That really applies to children to be honest..
of every ethnicity..
you just have to look at childrens toys/clothes to see the type of ideolgies that are being pumped in them. It's not their fault they want to hurry up and grow up its just its an adults world and they want to be part of it.

But like i said i haven't seen the program so i can't comment much...

Confidence? People have confidence to say many things but they don't. They don't HAVE to say it. It's usually those that want some sort of reaction; which they do get mind because people love giving and recieving attention anyway. That point about potential employers was pretty bullshit tbh. Confidence doesn't have to be shown by being outspoken.

So youre point is that the ideologies are being pumped into them so its not their fault. So why does it happen to the select few. Why do the majority of teens NOT go through these drastic changes? What you said was precisely the same argument that was used in the program by someone; they all want to be apart of the adult world. Why? Whats the rush? Then the same people who are in a rush complain that its the fault of "the media" and "society". The very mediums that they looked to in the first place for their initial break-out of the innnocent phase. And they still have the cheek to say its "not" their fault.

True say. Like I said before it's about the person themselves see as 'adult'. Some people might see it as drinking and sleeping around etc whereas some may see it as just being more mature. It goes to down to their own idea.

I still think there's nothing wrong with being outspoken. You just have to know what to say and when. I mean you can't always be outspoken all time. For example with your parents or your teachers. Because then that's just disrespectful and you should know when you keep your mouth closed. But to generally be an outspoken person is an asset and I wish I had it lol.

I didn't see it but when you talk about kids growning up fast, that happens in every race like Cheekz said. And what's the deal with the self harm? I don't know anyone who does it/use to do it (apart from me)
