Default English Language Guru's

Calling all fellow English Language Guru's.

I cant be asked to google it or look it up, but thought id ask here and see what the various and many different responses are.

What does it mean when somebody says: "I have sound knowledge in x,y,z" the bit about "Sound Knowledge" in particular?

Does it mean you are an expert? Intermediate or a novice? or maybe proficient? e.g. If you were an employer and the candidate wrote "sound knowledge" what will it mean to you? Proficient?

I know what it means but i want to know what other people think as mine interpretation could be different.

I will eagerly await for your reply.

Well definetly not novice. I'd say at least proficient. I would take it as that they have some depth in that area. If someone were an expert in something, then surely they'd have the qualifications to back that up. So i'd say in the proficient/intermediate area...

Sound to me means... enough to do the job... on them lines..

As said above definently not novice but not expert either... enough to do what is required.

My interpretation would be like the others... definitely not expert nor a novice but with sufficient knowledge to get by. Something which isn't a persons area of expertise but they have the adequate skills to perform a task to a satisfactory level.

As Sunshine said, its just to state that the person has a satisfactory or adequate understanding and/or skills in that area.

If i was to relate this to a job vacancy in particular a web dev position.

Sound knowledge of PHP/C# and any other language which maybe associated - would NOT mean having the basic understanding of the language itself so you can learn as you are on the job (very few places are like this). Don't be fooled by the wording, try to be at the top of your game in that area, as most employers don't want your Joe average.

I think sound knowledge would be having adequate knowledge to do something. This person may lack innovation as he/she just knows "this much". I suppose "sound knowledge" is the mimimum amount of knowledge needed to actually show someone else how to perform a job or task. Anything less than this, then he wouldnt be able to "teach".
