Hijab or ḥijāb (حجاب, IPA: [ħi.ˈdʒæːb]) is the Arabic word for "curtain / cover" (noun), based on the root حجب meaning "to cover, to veil, to shelter". In popular use, hijab means "head cover and modest dress for women" among Muslims, which most Islamic legal systems define as covering everything except the face and hands in public.[1][2] According to Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality
there's a wiki definition of a hijab. note the usage of the word modest a few times.

here i'll google modest for you too.

The whole attracting attention thing... aslong as its not showing the bits that are not meant to be shown then great, whats wrong with a pink hijab or a floral one?
I think the outfits are clever.

yes a pink hijab draws attention and a hijab is meant to show modesty but it doesn't draw attention for the wrong reasons, think of it as pride?

Mani is correct on the ruling of Hijaab. Most scholars from the schools of thought would agree with what he has said...

It's not really a tricky subject either. It's either you do it properly or you don't do it at all.

If people practised their religion properly, and fully understood what they were doing, then there wouldn't be the need to make these things look "fashionable".

Fashion isn't something you should find in religion.

Hijab is worn to learn modesty and humility.
If you wear a really nice piece of material on your head, and wrap it in such a way that it draws attention and makes you feel proud about yourself, you're obviously not wearing hijab...
You're wearing a scarf.

Did Ayesha or Fatima wear make up, or really really pretty clothes/scarves?
No.
(Obviously, 'cause times were hard and they were really poor)
...but shouldn't Muslims strive to emulate the ways of the Prophet and his companions?

I know that I don't follow a religion, and I shouldn't be preaching.
But, hey, if you choose to follow a religion, atleast do as you've been told.
Don't make things up to suit your lifestyle/mentality.

agreed

Whats with all this fashion crap anyway? Is it to conform to being beautiful and to be accepted? coz if so, it defeats the whole purpose of the hijab. The Muslim woman submits only to the restrictions, the commands and prohibitions of her Creator.

To discuss the divine hukm (order) revealed by Allah (swt) in the context of the man made, superficial and pretentious concept of 'fashion' is most definitely an insult to the rules of Islam.

I agree with you Rab, it's like my friend wears bright sparkly ones and I always thought that girls wore them so they wouldn't draw attention to themselves and then you get girls who wear those hijabs and also wear make-up - why bother?
