Lol, I love how people have this hugely righteous opinion on hijab/wearing a scarf etc., yet clearly don't wear a hijab and have nothing to back up all this 'conviction'.

Wearing flashy pink bits of material etc is clearly wrong yes.

But, nowadays, are we in a society where there's a higher proportion of women wearing a scarf as opposed to those not wearing a scarf?
So surely, in this context, a woman wearing a scarf will always attract a certain amount of attention anyway, regardless.
The whole essence of hijab, and in particular the veil, is not going outside your house either. You're being modest and keeping away from the public eye.
Yet you see women in veils in broad daylight. The purpose of the veil is not only protecting yourself from another mans gaze, but in turn, not gazing on other men.

Basically, my point is, in this society, you'll always get attention if you wear hijab. That's not to say don't practice it, but people seem to forget that when they bang on about the 'all-or-nothing' thing.
Everyone considers hijab as the pinnacle of piety as such, 'oh i wanna be totally religious before i start weraing it'.
People have to start somewhere and for some, the hijaab provides them with an identity - an identity which helps them strengthen their sense of faith and conviction.

You can mix fashion with the hijab, so long as its modest fashion. Many think modest fashion isn't around today, but it is. Why should a woman not dabble in fashion? She's still preserving her modesty.
The hijab isn't just to avoid attention. It's also to protect women from men, protect their modesty and a mans weakness for women etc. Wearing modest fashionable clothing can also serve for that purpose.

Jellytots... I understand what you're saying... but there's a difference.

Getting attention just because you're different is one thing...
Putting on a pretty scarf 'cause it looks nice and getting attention for it is something else.

Wearing the Hijab isn't the "be all, end all" of religion, for a woman.
However, it's a huge responsibility, and shouldn't be taken lightly.
Those who choose to wear hijab, should know exactly what Hijab/Pardah entails.
They can use it as a stepping stone to getting closer to Islam, but that doesn't mean they only wear the scarf and forget about adjusting their behaviour.

The reason I hated wearing Hijab was because there's a lot of restrictions on a woman's behaviour in Islam.
By choosing to wear hijab, you're physically declaring to everyone and Allah, that you agree with what Allah has ordered and you agree to follow them.

I chose to curb the outgoing part of my personality, I wore sombre colours, I tried my hardest not to laugh loudly... It didn't work.
I tried, sincerely, for five years.
...and I realised that obviously there was something wrong.

I do feel hypocritical in preaching what I don't practise...
...but I just think, if you're going to do something, do it properly.

Yes, there's a subtle difference but at the end of the day, surely its of the same effect?
People may look on a woman in hijab and say ma'sha'allah.
Then you get others who highlight the fact a woman is wearing hijab, pay extra special attention to that and then maybe notice her beauty, either natural or enhanced with makeup, and then, well they let that attention wander, so to speak...

I've recently decided to start wearing the hijab, my own decision and to say it was hard to begin with was an understatement. Overhauling the wardrobe, checking how I appear in public etc. it was all important. I'm not gonna lie, I still wear makeup, obsess over shopping and fashion insane amounts and that's something I'll gradually curb.
But I think people place such importance on that appearance, that attempt to avoid attention that they forget to cultivate their faith, which is far more important.
And thats when you get the problem of girls wearing the hijaab but only for appearance's sake.

Anyway, getting abit off track here.
Fashion and the covering of your modesty are inevitably gonna mix. You cannot get away from trends, fashion in our society today.
Its all well and good telling people to do everything to the fullest or you're a walking ball of hypocrisy but our lives are so full of contradictions as far as religion is concerned. No one is perfect.
I think the whole point of that video, was trying to forge a middle way so to speak. Providing women with a way to be fashionable, but modest at the same time.

This whole cliche thing of fashion being all about attracting attention. Again, what?!! For some, fashion isn't all this mainstream shit you get in the shops. Its a way of expressing yourself, its an art and a passion for some.
Modest fashion isn't there to attract attention, its to allow women that same form of expression as others, yet at the same time, protecting their modesty.

Girls who wear bright pink sparkly hijabs are trying their best to reconcile their religious obligation with their sinful desire to look fashionable/desirable.

I agree with what Rac C Nesbitt, Zero and Scrooge said on this matter. If you want to wear a hijab, then do it properly. A hijab is not a fashion accessory that you brandish on the catwalk. This "Muslim Fashion" launch is a joke.

On a side note, I saw a hijabi the other day in Boots who was wearing jeans so tight that Russell Brand would've been proud, and enough make-up to warrant a contract with Max Factor (which explains why she was browsing the cosmetics section)... and to top it off her mobile phone starting ringing to the tune of Beyonces... "ALL MY SINGLE LADIES! ALL MY SINGLE LADIES! ALL MY SINGLE LADIES! ALL MY SINGLE LADIES!"

No Joke.

People are trying to get in on the "religious market". It's incredible.

If someone needs a jilbab, they'll find a way to get one.

They don't need people to even try and sell it to them.

Lol @ Zanj... Hey, she might've just been covering her head from the heat.

jilbab and the muslim dress code

End of the day, if the person wearing the Hijab, fully understands the purpose of hijab nd working in the boundaries of Islam it isnt a problem. Selling Hijabs nd Juba's, nothing wrong with that, coz its business. The fashion side of it all, i think it should be kept simple, but then in islam it doesnt say nowhere that u cant look good as long as its modest.

adduonline.com/politics < If anyones interested, couple of good points that could be reffered back to this debate.

end of the day the one thing the passion of the christ showed us wasnt how jesus died on the cross etc - it was the power of commercialism in religion.

churches booked the cinema's out for weeks in advance.

and now the same is happenin to islam.

they're tryin very very hard to create some sort of commercial aspect that people can buy into. lets make some money outta these people whilst we can.

all this qibla coke etc was an effort into this - ok they donated an amount to charity to justify its claim it was a coke for the muslim market etc

the amount of tv stations dedicated to islam poppin up is a sign to its commercialism.

stuff like these fashion for islam and the numerous website cracking on selling something, anything, islamic is evidence that if it carries on we're gonna be buyin christmas on eid.

exactly.

the clothign world was always going to come into play and the hijab is one of the first ones to be amalgamated into the western need for fashion accessorizing.
