Default Mela Goes Wrong

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being stabbed during violence in the West Midlands that left more than 10 other people injured.

Police closed Handsworth Park in Birmingham after trouble flared at the Vaisakhi event, held as part of Sikh new year celebrations.
During the incident the man, thought to be in his 50s, was stabbed three times.

Six other people suffered significant injuries, including head wounds, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

'Difficult incident'

They and two others, with lacerations and bruising, were taken to hospital. Doctors treated other people at the park.

The ambulance service said staff also attended incidents in other parts of Handsworth, including a call to a woman, aged in her 50s, who had collapsed unconscious.

Hundreds of Sikhs had been expected to join a procession from the High Street in Smethwick to the park.

A spokesman said they were initially called out at about 1500 BST on Sunday.

Arterial bleed

"There is no doubt that this was a difficult incident for all of the crews, but they did an excellent job providing care to a range of injuries ranging from minor to severe," he said.

"We would like to pay credit to a number of police officers who came across a man with an arterial bleed and who had lost a large quantity of blood.

"They applied a pressure dressing to stem the blood loss until the ambulance staff could get to the man."

A paramedic motorcyclist had to be escorted from the park and an ambulance was also damaged during the disturbances.

Jay Singh, who went with his wife and two young sons, said he probably would not go to the event again.

He said: "I regret it now taking my children there.

"A sword was drawn. I can't recall.. if anybody was attacked with a sword, but I did moments later see a Sikh man sheathing that sword again.

"There was obviously scuffling, fighting. Grown men were carrying big sticks - it was a nasty experience."

Four held over festival stabbing

Witnesses reported seeing ceremonial swords being drawn
Four people have been arrested in connection with the stabbing of a 44-year-old man at celebrations in Birmingham to mark the Sikh new year.
He was stabbed three times in the chest when large scale disorder broke out at Handsworth Park, where the Vaisakhi event was being held on Sunday.

The man remains in a critical condition in hospital, West Midlands Police said.

Five other people arrested after fighting in which several people were hurt have since been released on bail.

About 70,000 people had gone to the park for the celebrations, but West Midlands Police had to close it after trouble flared.

'Let him die'

Witnesses reported seeing ceremonial swords being drawn and men carrying sticks.

A paramedic said people tried to rock their ambulance and open the doors as they made their way through the crowds to treat the stabbing victim.

He said one man stood in front of the vehicle and said: "Leave him, let him die."

A police spokesman said two processions to the park - from Smethwick and Lozells - passed off peacefully.

Police were forced to close the park due to the trouble

But then sporadic disorder resulted in five people being arrested for various offences including affray, possessing offensive weapons and assault.

At about 1530 BST, larger scale fighting took place in the park, close to the main event, during which the man was stabbed.

Four people were arrested and remain in custody, police said.

Six other people suffered significant injuries, including head wounds, and two more received hospital treatment for cuts and bruising.

A paramedic motorcyclist had to be escorted from the park and an ambulance was also damaged during the disturbance.

A girl, who had attended the event with a friend, told BBC News that a man covered in blood fell at their feet as they walked along a road before a "bunch of guys piled on top of him".

"It was very violent," she added.

Its disgraceful...Im ashamed that people of our community would behave in such a manner and be so violent because violence is something our religion definately doesnt teach people

Thats just sad, very sad.

To think that in this day and age this still happens, it just make me take pity on those unfortunate people.

They never learn from anything.

Worst thing is part of the trouble was Sikhs against Sikhs...

One day of celebration and remembrance and they couldnt leave it alone, its marred the memory of Vaisakhi for some.
