Default Indians protest 'racial attacks' in Australia

Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Australia to protest against violent attacks on Indian students which they say are racially motivated.

At least 2,000 Indian students and supporters took to the streets of Australia's second largest city Melbourne, demanding action for the safety of more than 90,000 Indians studying in the down under.

The students' union has also called on the Indian government to declare Australia an unsafe destination for Indian students if the attacks continue.

The largely peaceful demonstrations followed violent attacks on five Indian students in two unrelated incidents in Melbourne in the past week.

One victim, Sravan Kumar, 25, remains in critical condition in a Melbourne hospital after being stabbed with a screwdriver at a party. There have been more than 70 similar assaults over the past year.

Police have denied any racial motivation, arguing that Indian students often fall victim to assault because they travel alone late at night -- either from study or employment -- and carry valuable items such as laptops and phones.

On Sunday, Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said he had discussed the matter with his Indian counterpart and stressed that Australia would do everything within its power to prevent the violence and prosecute the perpetrators.

The issue has attracted prominent media coverage in India, prompting one of India's leading film stars, Amitabh Bachchan to turn down an honorary degree from Queensland University of Technology.
