Smoke Alarms - The Asian Place - Desi Forum

Do you have them in your home? I can't say I know many asian families who do.

I only know one cousin who does, and wishes they didn't, what with it going off everytime they burn a bit of toast...

And pretty much every time his wife cooks

Anyway, saw that "check your smoke alarm battery" ad on tv, and this crossed my mind...

We don't have any... wondering if I should bother getting some fitted...

yup, we have 5. 1 in the hall way, 1 in the dining room, 1 in the upstairs hallway and 2 in the attic

Yep we have one cos I live in a flat so it should be enough. It's a bit odd though. Used to be next to the kitchen but it kept going off everytime my mum cooked so now it's outside my room lol...

Yeh we have 2. Ones in the corridor and ones near the front door.

Apparently we need more (according to some surveyor).

You should definatly get one fitted.

Is it true their free in England? But not Scotland :S

Isn't a smoke alarm a legal requirement? We have 2 but I smashed them both as everytime my mom cooks it's like nuke siren going off

Yep We Have 4.. And They Are The Worse Thing Ever!!..

Its Good If there was guna be a fire and that.. But.. when ever we make Paranthe OMG the Noise.. So Irritating!!.. Dad got angry once.. and he pulled one out from the cieling [was a few days back].. its still dangling and still makes the loud irritating noise!!.. Our Alarms are wierd we cant remove the battery.. they not the battery ones!!

We have one in our tv room which is near the kitchin.. one near the stairs... one near the other stairs and one near the attic so thats about 4 in total?

we got them fitted for free

but oh my gosh its so annoying!!! when mum cooks.. we have to have the broom in our hand and run around shutting the alarms as they keep going off...

Got one in my room, one on the upstairs landing, one in the hallway downstairs. Think builders added a further two in the extention part of the house.

Our intial ones were all free as far as I know. Firedudes come round...asssessed and fitted em.

Ours is so annoying

Seriously everyday it goes off atleast 4-5 times. and have to waft the bit of smoke near the alarm with a pillow from the sitting room to make it switch off sometimes

We got two. one right next to the kitchen. and one upstairs.

We didn't have a working one for the past 8 years.
So, when I arranged a visit from the Fire Service to the local community centre, I asked if they could pop round some time and do my house.

My parents hate me for it.
But, atleast I feel safe, knowing that if anything smoke related happened, I'd know about it when there's still time.

The fire services have made adverts in Bengali and Urdu and are going to be broadcasting them from February, on Bengali and Pakistani channels.

yeh at the moment av em in the hallway but am gna get a whole wired up system in my house rather than the crappy battery operated ones .... btw peoples with the problems with the kitchen one u need a heat detector rather than a smoke alarm in there

Yep. Have one in every room.

During cooking, we just simply take the battery off and then put it back on after finishing.

^That's gotta be a pain in the butt to do all the time...

Yeah I figure it would go off a lot in our house too, we have a tendency to leave something on the stove and wander off to watch a bit of tv
