The Prophet (Sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) (reported) to have said: “Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim.”
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) :اطلبوا العلم من المهد الي الحد (Study knowledge from birth to death) Contents: Hadiths of the week Test your Islamic Knowledge Good Intentions Q & A Beliefs of a Muslim Did you Know? Hadiths of the week Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said : Command your children to peform Salaah when they are seven years of age, and punish them when they are ten years of age (if they do not perform Salaah), and separate their beds." ( Abu Daawood ) Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: "A believer should not bear hatred against a believing woman. If he dislikes one of her qualities he will be pleased with another". (Muslim) Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said : "Fear Allah in whatever condition you may be. Do a good deed after you have committed a sin. Deal with people by way of good character." (Tirmidhi) Test your Islamic Knowledge 1. Surah Feel mentions the 'People of the Elephant' who were destroyed by an army of birds? Who was the leader of the 'People of the Elephant'? 2. In which battle was Zaid Ibn Haaritha, Jafar Ibn Abi Taalib Abdullah Ibn Rawaaha Radhi Allahu Anhum martyred? Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam described this battle to the Sahabah in Madinah while it was going on. 1. Qasida Burda 2. Khidr Alaihis Salaam 3. Battle of Muta Good Intentions An act which is mubaah (lawful) carries no reward or punishment in itself. eg. eating, sleeping, etc. However, if a person does this action with a good intention then such a mubaah action will be rewarded by Allah Ta'ala. Thus, when eating one can make the intention that the food consumed will provide energy for Salaah, Tilaawah of Quran, etc. With this intention eating will become an act of worhip. When sleeping one can make the intention that one is resting the body so that one becomes refreshed and can be more concentrated in ibaadah. With this intention sleeping will become an act of worship. Earning an honest living through trade or performing a service, with the intention of fulfilling the commands of Allah Ta'ala, like supporting ones family, will earn a reward from Allah. While earning, if one intends to spend on the poor this will earn an additional reward from Allah Ta'ala. A person who studies or learns a certain profession could make the intention of serving humanity through the knowledge gained. This studying and learning will earn a reward from Allah Ta'ala due to the good intention. A person studying Islam should intend to propagate the knowledge learnt. A person in the medical field should make the intention to alleviate human suffering. A similar good intention could be made by any person who learns the specialities of his profession. If a parent shows love and affection to their children because it is a Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, they will be rewarded by Allah. If a husband assists the wife with household chores knowing it to be a Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam, this will carry a reward. To be hospitable to guests with the intention of Sunnah will carry a reward. Planting a tree or plant so that it is of benefit to other people or animals will carry a reward. If a woman dresses in beautiful attire and wears jewelry within her home to please her husband, she will be rewarded for this. If a man dresses in a neat and clean attire to please his wife, he will be rewarded for this. If a couple engage in some form of light entertainment with the intention of Sunnah they will be rewarded for this. Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam ran races with his wife Aisha Radhi Allahu Anha. Q&A What are the Islamic laws regarding custody of children following a divorce? Answer : These are the regulations regarding custody following a divorce: 1. When the husband and wife have been divorced the mother of the child has the right of custody over the child until the age of seven for a boy and nine for a girl. During this time when the mother has the right of custody, the father cannot take the child away. If the mother does not take the child, and instead, gives it to the father, he will have to take it. The mother cannot be forced to keep the child. 2. Once the boy reaches the age of seven and the girl reaches the age of nine, the father can take the child forcefully if he wishes to do so. 3. If there is no mother or she refuses to take the child, the maternal grandmother will have the right of custody. The sequence for custody rights will, thereafter continue, as follows : the maternal great grandmother, then the paternal grandmother or great grandmother, then the blood sisters of the child, then the stepsisters. However, as regards stepsisters, those who are from the same mother will be given preference over those who are from the same father. Thereafter, the child's maternal aunts and then the paternal aunts. 4. If the mother marries a person who is not a mahram relative of the child, i.e. this relative is such that nikah with him is not haraam forever, then the mother forfeits the right of custody over the child. However, if the woman marries a mahram relative of this child, and this relative is such that nikah with him is not valid (for the child), then the mother's right of custody remains. For example, if she marries the child's paternal uncle or any other similar relative her custody will remain over the child. In the absence of the mother, if any other woman such as the child's sister, maternal aunt, etc. marries a man who is not a mahram of the child, the same rule will also apply. That is, the right of custody over the child no longer remains with this woman. 5. If the right of custody over the child had been forfeited on account of the woman marrying a man who is not a mahram of the child, and she is thereafter divorced from him or he passes away, the right of custody will return to this woman and the child will be handed over to her. 6. If, from among the relatives of the child, no woman can be found in order to take custody of the child, the father will be the most eligible for custody. Thereafter, the sequence for custody rights will continue as follows: the paternal grandfather, the great grandfather, the blood brothers, the step brothers, the nephew, the nephew's son, the nephew's grandson, the blood uncle, etc. (Futher details in the books of Fiqh) However, if the relative is not a mahram and there is some fear over the safety of the child in the future, then in such a case the child will be given to someone who is reliable and trustworthy. 7. A person forfeits the right of custody over the child if the safety of the child is compromised while in their care. 8. The father will have to pay for all the expenses that will be borne in order to bring up the child. It is the father's responsible to maintain the child at all times, whether the child is with him or with the mother. If he fails to maintain the child, he will be sinful. 9. Both the parents are entitiled to visitation rights. These have to be agreed by mutual consent. (This answer is in accordance with the Hanafi Mazhab). Question : Can a woman keep long nails and what is the ruling regarding Salaah with long nails? Answer : Abu Hurairah Radhi Allahu Anhu narrates that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam said: "Five acts are amongst fitrah : circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the nails, plucking the hair beneath the armpits and clipping the moustache (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Daawood, Tirmidhi, Ahmed). The Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam mentioned the clipping of the nails among the aspects of fitrah. Fitrah has been explained by the muhadditheen as that system which was common to all the prophets and has been established as a fundamental aspect of divine Shariah. In other words, these actions are in accordance with the natural disposition of man. (Mirqaat) Muhadditheen also mention that clipping of the nails constitute cleanliness as long nails become a collection point for dirt. Long nails are, thus, unhygienic. If the dirt accumulated beneath the nails prevents water from reaching the inner portion of the nail, the wudhu and ghusal will also not be valid. This would invalidate the Salaah and other ibaadah as well. The Fuqaha (jurists) have also mentioned that it is preferable to cut the nails on a weekly basis. If not cut weekly, they should at least be cut once in fifteen days. However, to leave the nails uncut for forty days or more would be a sin. (Tahtaawi Alal-Maraaqi) Women generally keep long nails and apply certain cosmetics like nail polish on them as a form of beautification. If the cosmetics are such that they form a barrier on the nails and this prevents water from reaching the nails, the wudhu and ghusal will be invalid. The same would apply to any gels or glue in the case of artificial nails. Henna (mendhi) does not form a coating or barrier on the skin or nails and this does not prevent water from reaching the skin or nails. To apply henna to the nails is recommended. Therefore, for the above reasons women should not keep their nails long. They should be cut regularly. Who has stolen the chicks? Ibn Masood Radhiyallahu Anhu narrates : “Once we were with Rasoolullah Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam on a journey. He left us for a short while and we saw a small bird with two chicks. We took away the chicks. The mother bird returned and began to flutter her wings in uneasiness. When Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam returned and saw this he asked : "Who has caused distress to this bird by removing her chicks? Return her young to her!" ” (Abu Dawood) This amazing kindness taught by Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasllam had a tremendous effect on the Sahabah. Yaqut Al-Hamawi in Mu’jamul Buldaan mentions that during the conquest of Egypt, Amr Ibn al-Aas Radhi Alahu Anhu, a Muslim commander, received the go-ahead from Umar to conquer Alexandria. As he issued the command that his tent be pulled down he noticed that a pigeon had laid her eggs in a corner of the tent. He commanded : "Leave the tent standing until the eggs are hatched and the young birds can fly away on their own." He then appointed a person to guard the nest so that no harm would come to the pigeon and her eggs. Amr himself proceeded to Alexandria and remained engaged there for six months. When Allah had granted the Muslims victory he returned to his original tent and established the city of Al-Fustaat close to it. Fustaat means tent in Arabic. Al-Fustaat, today known as Fostat, is part of the 'Old Egypt' district in Cairo. Lessons 1. Islam places great emphasis on kindness and respect for all of Allah’s creation. 2. None of the English encyclopaedias consulted under the topic of Fostat or Fustat had the incident of Amr Ibn-Aas and the birds. This was probably because Western scholarship has not studied Arabic sources of knowledge adequately in their research. It is for this reason that the majority of history books and documentaries of the West are incomplete. Arabic and Islamic history has numerous lessons for the seeker of true knowledge. Those who shut their eyes will remain blind. 3. The Sahabah reached their heights of glory and greatness because they followed the teachings of their master, Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. Today the Muslim Ummah has become the scum of the earth because Muslims have given preference to an inferior way of life that is opposed to the blessed Sunnah of Nabi Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam. When the Ummah again makes Makkah their Qiblah instead of Hollywood and Bollywood Muslims will once again earn the respect of the world. Comments can be sent to the author at info@maw.za.org
