Naming a muslim child a non arabic name?

Hey there.

Was just wondering if anyone knows the proper ruling on weather you can name your child a non arabic name? Or a name that isn't an Islamic name.

I've heard that there isn't such a rule on naming kids.

Although you have to give the child a good name, not something like "bringer of cruelty" or "mosquito face" or something lol.

Many people don't have Islamic names...I don't have one my self...but obviously its better if the kid DOES have an Islamic name. Identity and all that jazz.

Meh, I know loads of bengalis with names like Happy, Sweety, Lucky, Bebbi (erm, baby?)...

They tend to have a proper muslim name on their birth certificate, but are called this other name by everyone, in an attempt to try to fool Westerners into thinking they're English I guess

I read somewhere that islam doesnt require us only to give our children arabic names..as its a universal religon..as long as it is a noble name. However there are certain guidelines that one must follow..which i cannt fully remember right now..but its something along the lines of those names which indicate shirk or are offensive.

well my uncle his sons name is 'samual' and his daughters name is 'soniya'

so i guess....

i donnno alot of ppl now them days assume its written down as if u gotta give them the islamic name....

ill give my kids an islamic name but only as there 2nd name...

I looked it up on Islam QA, and they give a whole load of rules are stuff..

and one second they say its forbidden to give a foriegn name, and a few lines later its makrooh..

'[It is forbidden] Using foreign names, such as Turkish, Persian, Berber, etc. names, that have no origin in the Arabic language.'

We could not find this name or its derivation in sources on the Arabic language. It seems that it comes from another language.
Based on that, it should not be used unless the meaning is known. If it does not have any bad meaning that goes against Islam or good morals, such as the name of a god or a permissive meaning that promotes evil, or self-praise, then there is nothing wrong with using it.
It is better to give one's sons and daughters good names whose meanings are known. '

yes many time even in pakistan Nwfp areas people assign name non arabic like samundar khan etc.

From my understanding your allowed to name your kid whatever you want as long as it has a good meaning and the origin of the name isn't something which contradicts with Islamic Teachings e.g. the meaning is not an attribute of God.

It doesn't matter which culture/language its from but I think its common sense not to name your kid a biblical name i.e. the prophets mentioned in the bible. For example a lot of South Americans and Latins name their kid Jesus which is a distorted version of the name Isa. So its kind of common sense not to name your kid that.

God knows, I've named my kids after animals and insects. Isnt that right kids...
