Masters?

anyone here done one?

what are your views on them? are they worth the time/money.. or not really looked at too much?

I'v always been under the impression they aren't worth it too much at that the time could be better spent on a proffesional qualification or working.
But then i'm hearing froma few people now that they do help quite a bit?

depends on the field your doing a masters in really, there are professions thta dont really need a masters or a masters may be looked down on as someone with a standard standard degree would have the experience in that field over a period of say a year.. so experience would overcome that.. but a masters in certain field such as mine....

im doing a masters in osteopathic medicine... its part of my 4 ears doing this degree so when i finish i will find it easier to get into a private clinic and work even though usually within the last year your looking oon finding a job for when your finished or getting your green card ready for australia to work there for a year or two...

it depends, I've done a masters (nearly) and it was to give me experience in a different subject.

some people prefer a years experience over a masters, as do some employers but if you do a masters and have also worked part time or had experience before then it could help, it's just extending your knowledge, and a bit more difficult to pass etc.

so just depends what subject your looking into, have a search around, ask possible employers if they think a masters will help you and that will give you the answer.

it's beneficial, yes, but again it differs for subjects.

well i want to go into finance really, just a bit unsure on the exact field etc right now too.. which is why i think a masters may help me.. give me time to think it all out etc

ahh cool, so is it like with architecture? like you're done after the first 3 years.. but you can/have to do the bit after it to be fully qualified?

man i was thinking of doing a masters in some finance related area next year as well, but now i dont know if there are gonna be enough job opportunities in finance to make it worthwhile or not

nope, I did BSc Computer Studies (with 2 of the years Web Development) and then done a masters in Management. I didn't want to go into computer related jobs i.e. programmer, and regretted doing my subject so went for a masters in management to give me more experience in business/management related subjects.

some people do go further and do a masters in the same subject but I don't see the point, a years experience in the relevant field would probably be better but if your going for grad schemes then you only need a degree.

although in some cases a masters would be benefitial, engineering etc. but again if you got your degree and a years experience you would have the same options unless of course the jobs you want would prefer you did a masters, it's best to find out.

Masters are for people who got 2:2s to make themselves more desirable to employers.

Or for people who want a PhD and have to do it.

They are worthless, and a waste of time and money.

i wonder what employer's will ask for after everyone starts getting work experience...

when everyone had degrees...employer's asked for work experience...to make the individual stand out...but now that everybody is focusing on gaining work experience.....what will employer's ask for next...

Get a good first degree with a 2:1 or 1st; then do a bit of work experience, preferably as part of a sandwich year at uni (coz it's easier that way) and then apply to a graduate scheme through one of those graduate recruitment websites.

There are just so many people with 2:1 to choose from, why would anyone go for someone with a 2:2? It's a real kick in the balls if you get it. That's why people go back to uni for a Masters, coz they can get into a better uni and do some bum arse masters.

Truth is when you come out, you'll get paid the same as someone with a BSc/BA and worser, employers couldn't give a horse shit if you done a Masters.. Trust me, I seen it... If you do it, do it on the way to a PhD or if you wanna do it for yourself to flash to your cousins in Pakistan or India who say they got a MSc/MA... They all have them, coz their degree courses are 2 years and they get a Masters with another year on top..... Means shitall.

Yeah thats a no joke.... People there will love you, coz you got a UK degree pluss you can speak English like a native, so you can front their customer facing shyte.... They want you... You'll get paid less than your wage here, but you'll live in a mansion and get gym, car, petrol and anything else you can think of free....

I got a 2:1 and done a masters, although in my case it's to gain different experience because I wasn't actually interested in my degree lol

I've only seen a few jobs asking for masters, or saying masters would give you a better chance but in general experience is more important in the field you want to work

In my opinion, seem's pretty pointless to do a master's in something which you've done a degree in. But if you do it in something kind of linked, or another subject completly, your broadening your knowledge and skills, which can't be classed as a bad thing.

But the way the job scene's messed up at the moment, prolly not the best way to go.

yeh i got a 2.1 but never did the year out, or get a proper placement in to the finance field, which sucks so any experience i have isn't really related to what i want to do.

interesting about the employerse though.. i was under the impression, that with each qualification/degree you're employability/wage is meant to increase?
