Tell me about it! But it's like 'Look at your cousins... they got a job and look at you'. I mean fckin hell theres more important things in life then money.

He said to me 'Why do you need to go India? India is not for you anymore'. I was just thinking 'When I make enough money India is first place I'm going'.

    Dude.
    Patience.

    Work towards your independence.
    Wait for it.

I've spent an awful of time being miserable and resenting the family for having responsibilities but not freedom...
but, I've realised, the more I complain about it, the less likely they'll take me seriously.

    So, I'm silently badgering on.

    Then, when it's my time.
    I'm fucking off.

I'm doing it this year I hope. Taking a whole year out to volunteer. Hoping to do Peru in October.

Dad's going to say no but I don't care. I'm going and that's that. He'll have to accept it.

If I get in that is lol.

tell him how good it will look on your CV, because it's voluntary, different country and also helping others, say that employers would see that as an advantage than say a few weeks paid working somewhere, which you can do next year.

I'll write to you pretending to be the president of Uganda, requesting your services and saying how you will go down in history, kinda like achilles in troy.

    Oh, Guj...
Sometimes you have to sort it out for yourself, and then let your parents know.

Asking permission only works if if there's mutual respect for each other's needs.

    Peru sounds amazing.
I'm contemplating volunteering after my NQT year.
...Or doing something like Camp America.

    Good luck, Bubs.

Yep exactly. This time I'm going to sort it all out, hopefully get in, inform Uni, and then tell them, rather than ask and Dad saying no.

Oo you should go for it. Just get into your head that you're going no matter what and it becomes easier family wise.

    Thanks, you too.

I wish I had this self confidence back when I was on the dole.
    I could've applied then.
Now, I'm not prepared to give up my training for volunteering.

    ....Sounds shit, I know.
But, I'll always have time to volunteer and help people. I only have three years to train.

Nah, it doesn't. A friend of mine wanted to do it with me. She's actually the one that inspired me to go for it with her 'I don't give a fuck' attitude that's somehow rubbed on me, but she's got a scholarship for Uni and they won't delay it for a year so the one that inspired me isn't going. But yeah, prioritise.

My parents have been strict when I was younger, but I'm working hard now and don't really exceed limits or take the piss like I used to i.e stroll home really late, so they seem to trust me more - and I never ask them for permission, I just sort of tell them the plan and hope they won't rage. I've been looking into Camp America, my mates have been and it sounds amazing. I'm sure the parents will have to accept when I tell them I've booked and paid good luck Guji-ji!

Shug, Camp America? How much money does it actually cost?
The university have warned us from it. Apparently it's disorganised and just not safe.

...So, I'm looking at RYS, instead.
It's interreligious and I met some amazing people when they came to do a mural at the local Masjid.

Hey Rab, well it's just under £500 for travel and accommodation. But you get paid while you're there, and it's a good three months of wage, so it accumulates and then you can travel America for the last one month and spend it. I haven't heard anything bad so far, I know girls that have been. Dangerous in what sense? Life threatening?

I'm off uni for 5 months and really want to travel/work.

Oh cool, are you at uni yeah? RYS, I'm googling it as we speak. Muslim organisations with some universities are to arranging a trip to Palestine. I would go in a heartbeart.
