    Default Music in Islam..

Ok so i know theres this debate about whether or not music is allowed in Islam. Some say its haraam and others say its not depending on the context.

I understand the concept of not listening to songs where its lyrics to an extent can 'intoxicate' you bla di blah..so one must avoid that sort of stuff.
However some nasheeds also involve music and im not talking about the just duff which is allowed anyway, but the use of other instruments as well..so yea im confuzzled

    Who/what is right?

    Hmm.

I've always wondered this myself. I remember talking to a teacher aide who was Muslim and she was telling a music teacher that music is not encouraged in Islam. I can't remember the reason why she said so.. but then I always wonder, because you have muslim artists like Nursat Fateh Ali Khan?

I think artists like Nusrat did nasheeds without any instruments but others used his tracks and remixed them?

Duff is acceptable. Using voice for music? I think thats wrong but a lot of people say its okay.

Music like we know of is haraam but its become like an addiction.

I've definitely seen videos and heard tapes where he's been doing performances with a group of musicians surrounding him. It wasn't any of the fusion tracks like the one done by Massive Attack though.

I think generally most agree it is haraam because of this hadith in Bukhari:

"There will be people of my Ummah who will seek to make lawful; fornication, wine-drinking and the use of ma`aazif ( musical instruments )."

But then I've read some arguments that say it is allowed.

    Marni probably knows more.

And Ranj, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan isn't someone you look at if your looking for Islamic rulings or guidance. I mean I'm sure there's muslim pornstars, does that make it right?

    Sahih Bukhari
    Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v:

Narrated Abu 'Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash'ari:

that he heard the Prophet saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.

Hmmm.. so does it say anything about the use of the duff then..that still makes sound right?
