    Default Laptop heating up!!!

Right guys, I have a MacBook Pro and recently it's been getting REALLY REALLY hot and the fan gets really loud. Is it something I should be worried about or is it for normal for that to happen to laptops?

I used to have a similar problem with my old laptop which was a HP but as soon as that got hot it would switch off.

Shall I get it checked out just to be on the safe side or am worrying for no reason?

Thing is it could be a number of things.

The worst case scenario is that either your CPU or GPU are heating up and in order to cool it down, the fan kicks up a storm.

But saying that, if it were an overheating issue, then as soon as the Macbook would warm up, it would shut itself down to stop any thermal damage to itself. If it is not shutting down, then it could be as simple as that you are runninga lot of processes in the background.

If that is the case, then the more processes you run in the bacground, then the harder the machine has to work in order to fulfill those processes, hence why it heats up more. Its like the same principle of any machine, the harder you push it, the hotter it gets.

If you really are worried, then take it into a local Mac repair centre, they can tell you if it is thermal issues or just general usage heat.

If it is thermal issues, and its either your CPU, GPU or the Logicboard then you may as well buy a new Macbook.

Another thing, make sure that the vents on either side of the Macbook are clear. It may seem clear to you on the outside, but on the inside, on the mesh grille, dust build up is horrendous.

So get a vacuum cleaner and stick it on the vents to suck out any dust that may be there. It could be something as simple as that.

Also, open Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder) and check for any hung up process which might be running in the background and hogging the CPU. Be sure to select "All Processes" at the top and "CPU" on the bottom bar. Sometimes a process will hang up and hog the CPU, causing extra heat and fan activity.

All I have running is the internet and itunes. It was fine when I first brought it worked like magic but recently it's started to play up. Sometimes it gets real slow as well. When it heats up and the fan goes mad I restart it then its perfectly fine for a while.

Get a new one? lol yh my insurance should cover it, just don't wana lose everything that I have on here!

It doesn't have any vents or am I just being blind and stupid? lol sorry I seriously don't know anything about these sorta things but I am pretty sure there are no vents.

Ok I' just opened the activity monitor there doesn't seem to be much going on, there are loads of programmes running but where it says CPU usage most of them are 0%

    Anyway thank you Ritz, appreciated.

Close it, the air vent is at the back. Aesthetics come before poxy-ventilation for Apple. Mine sounds like a hoover just now, but spose its coz I've got uTorrent running lol ive been resting my laptop ontop of a folder instead of my lap, makes a diff

Gen = generation. What year was it released. With every model of year machine there come common issues.

You should have backed everything up then! That'll teach u

yeah insurance will cover it, but they won't back anything up, all they will do is fix the issue and restore it back to how you got it from the shop.

From what you've said, if it goes back to normal after a restart, that suggests that there is an issue with the CPU on the machine. Its sounds as if that it is getting overloaded with information and cant cope with everything at once.

They should be either on the side or the back. As Queen Bee said, close the lid and you should see them.

What's it getting overloaded with though? The only programmes I use are itunes and the net. I don't know how to use anything else lol

The suction from the hoover will create a vacuum where everything will just get sucked out. It works nicely as its a nice tight small space.

What you worrying about then? If you got it in March, you're still within you're warranty period, just get it fixed.
