Apostasy - A Question

Any Muslim worth his salt would know that the punishment for apostasy in Islam is death.

I don't know.

However I think you may be confused with "apostasy" and "treason" from the way it used to be practiced. Treason is crimes against the state. Since the state was ruled with Shariah not a seperate government you would be put to death. And in those days, I think especially in Khalid Bin Walid's time (the general), people who were put to death were those that had left Islam and had engaged in treason. e.g being a sellout, which was quite common during the war times.

Also, I don't think the prophet ever punished anyone for apostasy. And theres been numerous cases where apostates who didn't commit treason were allowed to leave the area. There was one account in Bukhari when some Bedouins wanted to cancel their pledge to the Prophet, which he disagreed...after several times of asking, he was still denied and then left the city? There was no trial or death of these bedouins?

Lastly, Muslims out of all people should know that hadith cannot be taken literally.

There are a few Scholars such as Ibrahim al-Nakhai and Shams al-din al Saraksi (sp?) that have researched it and shed light on the matter.

You could be right about the treason thing but usually the hadiths don't mention anything about treason so that can't always be used.

As for taking it literally I haven't. I've gone onto a few sites, ones I trust and random ones and that is the general consensus.

Tbh, apostasy is not punishable by death. I don't go down that road. Apostasy should (and will in my belief) is a matter that will be sorted betwee you and your creator on the day of judgement

That's what I believe too but I haven't found any compelling evidence to suggest that apostasy isn't punishable by death and that there is any justification.
