I've been looking around for a new digi cam but I'm a bit stuck as I know f-all about cameras.

A few people have mentioned the Panasonic TZ5... anyone know if it's any good?

I don't really have a budget, but the cheaper the better! I'm not really fussed about the fancy features etc... just want something that'll enable me to take high quality photos.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Ah, my bad. I jsut realised it was something else. Hm...

Well, don't get one just because it has higher magapixels...that just means the picture is going to be much bigger. Doesn't say much about the camera quality.

I would recommend a Nikkon, Olympus or a Pentax camera to be honest...but these days a lot of cameras by non-specialists are just as good!

Theres so much choice out there, you'd have to do a lot of looking about...perhaps flick through the argos catalogue and see one that you like...then check reviews of it online....

what will you be using it for? nights out? just general pic taking? holidays and stuff like that?!

a lot of cameras out there, the best are the SLR cameras, but they are very expensive. Sony have a good range with very good features too. Olympus are also very good, a bit low on the features but the quality of picture is amazing. Panasonic are also very good, the SLR cameras which i have used in the past are very high in quality, I havn't used a normal digital camera of theirs though.

Megapixels are the amount of tiny squares you get per inch of your photograph, the high the MP the higher the quality and larger your pictures will be.

Zoom, dont be fooled by the zoom, a lot of cameras say 10x zoom, but what you need is optical zoom, which will allow you to zoom without loss of quality to your photographs, digital zoom stretches your pixels (back to the megapixels) which creates a loss in quality.

So in a nutshell, go for a camera with high optical zoom, if you have a tight budget, go for a 5MP digital camera with 7x optical zoom.

I would stay away from samsung cameras, they are cheap but the build is crap and the quality is poor too. go for sony or olympus. you get good quality for a reasonable price.

I just want it to for general pic taking like on nights out etc. Someone recommended the Sony Cybershot W170... which is also fairly reasonable in price.

I'll have a good look around before I decide.

whats ur budget? do you mind buying online or would u prefer to buy from a store?

Hmmm... well I don't really wanna spend more than about £175 as I have a tendency to break stuff... but anything between £150 and £175 would be ideal. And I don't mind buying online or in-store.

hhmm when i read your first post about not having a budget i was gong to actually recomment something that you wouldnt need to change your whole life but seeing as you dont wana spend more than £175, i wont recommend it as it goes into the £750-£1000+ margin...

try look for an SLR camrea, like i said they are investments you wont need to change ever... great quality only downfall is the price tag
