Default University degrees?

Just wanted to get all your opinions on university degrees, do you think they are worth it?

Sure a lot of them are, but come on we all know average joe who does his IT/Business course, just to say he went to university, but the thing is after they are finised, the market is usually flooded with these degrees and as such they amount to nothing more than a piece of paper.

What do you think about gaining experience first? This is what im currently doing during my hiatus from education (well Uni, Im going to tweak my a-levels) Im working in an office and feel that maybe it will help once I finish my degree.

And honestly many people see university as another part of life, 'I just want to finish my degree', but don't really look beyond how it will affect their lives or they go just for dossing about.

How do the rest of you feel?

Well i know lots of university graduates who cant get a job in their field, they either in some retail job etc or sitting at home.

Work policies are so bolloxs cuz dey neva look at your education only experience..how in da blue are u gonna get experience if no company takes em on in the 1st place!

thats not strictly true you know, you can be successful without a degree
depends on how you measure success, but you're right in the sense that it will prolly make it easier to get a job

dunno the exact amount or if the teacher was talkin waffles but he said that a graduate earns 100K more than a non-graduate..so in that sense..why not get a degree..also down my area..if it applies elsewhere..you get a loan but you don't pay a dime back until you earn 15K at least..

Graduates do earn more than non-graduates, according to national statistics. Recent Labour Force Survey data comparing the earnings of graduates and non graduates show that individuals with HE qualifications currently earn on average around 50% more than those without.

A degree is about being able to get the best chance in life to earn lots of money, other than that, its a whole load of schizer!!!! DespToilet

yeh i agree with a lot of what your saying, apart from "you wont get anyhere without a degree"

and throw any of those statistics in the face of lakshmi mittel, richard branson and alan sugar to name a few, and they would laugh in your face.

My uncle was saying that they said in the news that "degrees are not worth the paper that they're written on".

I never went to uni, I personally think it's a load of bollocks, I've got a job which is really good starting out on 15k next year I will probably be on a different band coz I will be working in a different department but it will be more than 15k, I know that gradutes get more than that, but look how long it takes to find a job that they want and they are already in debt before they even get a job! All the job agencies are shit too they said to me that I would only be able to get a job starting from 10k coz they said I didn't have enough experience, now I'm laughing in their faces!

But I guess the universities are to blame aswell coz most of them charge £3000 per year on tutiion fees! Plus they would have all their living costs to consider aswell, which is why alot of students don't even go to uni coz they don't want to be in alot of debt! But from this year, you can get grants to help you, and you don't have to pay it back, it's a way of helping student debt.

Also, I have found that with some people, they go to uni, and they are still dumb i.e. they dont have any common sense, they went to uni, got their degree but that's all they know, stuff about their course but they don't have any general knowledge. I even get students coming in to see me at work everyday to fill in their forms for their loans and most of them are just so thick and can't even fill out a simple form! How the hell are they going to do all their assignments and things if they can't even fill out a simple form!

Alot of students can't even get jobs these days though, they just end up working in Morissons or something daft.

tis a worrying state of affairs, theres no denying it...the govt sayin 505 of school lavers should go to uni is a massive waste of money, the most popular course are over subscribed, and i wanna rant on and on about this but i feel as if my head will drop off if i carry on
