    Post Most Respected/Best Degrees?

Been discussing this with other students/work colleagues and it seems everyone has an opinion on what constitutes a respected degree and what makes a course "mickey mouse" and it can be a contraversial topic! Living in an time where everybody has an undergraduate degree, the value of obtaining one has decreased to new lows with employers looking for experience>academics.

What are the 3 most respected/best degrees for a student to embark upon at university? (in terms of workload/academic skills/career prospects/competetiveness/general perception/value to society etc).

    IMO
    1. Medicine/Dentistry/Vet Science
    2. Law
    3. Maths or Physics

-followed closely by Engineering(Chemical/Electrical/Mechanical), Economics, English and Philosophy.

    So what does everyone think?

Tbh I would probably have the simmilar ranking as you. So many people drop out doing medicine because they can't handle the amount of info. I've seen medic notes in my uni and tbh I learnt half the stuff in 2 hours. Its the amount that comes every day; thats scary. Whats impressive is if you survive it; your brain will have to be like a sponge.

    Medcine/Dentistry coming first.

Then would be Law and Engineering (trust me Engineering is incredibly difficult, its these dudes that come up with the mathematical bases of architecture, its no joke).

Coming next would be any pure science subject; Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Biology etc.

I disagree when everyone has got a degree; it really depends on which institution you got it from as well: Thats a big difference in marketable value. When it comes down to a job; if you show aptitude at an interview and have enough flair and can somehow prove to the employer you're there to make money for them, they'll take you on.

Oh I'd also add Economics to 2nd Place.

yeah i would agree, although in a country like uk, surely surely surely economics is the best degree to have? Most large branches of banks are run here, and what better place to earn your money aswell.

Your forgetting pharmacy, thats another major degree people would take. If your looking to get an engineer degree here, you would have to consider to find a job abroad, as there are literally no opportunities here to find a job. So actually it kind of depends which country u get which degree in.

I would like to add though; its quite narrow minded to put a specific rating on degrees in general. There are so many speciality degrees out there than would earn you megabucks within the year of graduation. It's only because such degrees I mentioned have been around long enough and are established and have some sort of royal membership, or Royal Charter; as granted by her majesty the queen, i.e. ICAEW, BCS, MRCP etc.

Take for example a Investment Banking degree from City University, not really a known degree but its cash value is a LOT when it comes to a specialist career. You gotta take that into account, so generally speaking, you can't really put degrees on a hierarchy.

end of the day it's how you perform in the job interview and tests because my mate who got a 2:2 beat guys from the likes of Cambridge etc. who got 1st degrees to a job in accountancy at ford. he was disappointed so worked his ass off to do well in the tests and made sure he knew his shit prior to the interview, now he's kushty.

degrees like medicine and engineering generally lead to very well paid jobs but are really stressful and you have A LOT of work to do. Law is well respected too but you generally need to a high result i.e. 1st/2:1 and make sure your knowledge is on point.

all asians look for is that the person has a degree (can be in anything) and they have a good job. the days of the doctor/lawyer being the only respected ones have gone.

very true what zero and spig said. Its all bout the persons flair and personality and ability to answer interviews. Nowadays its all about the same, degrees will just inflate your value. Or isit the other way round? Works either way.

Sephiroth: Very true; to those 3. One of my relative has a 1st in Science; in the other hand my sibling has a 2.2... Both applied for the same place; my sibling was the victor. It does/doesn't matter what you get; if you can show a positive interview.
Sephiroth: I will... never be a memory!

To most generations and especially older generations, a degree in Law, Medicine or Dentistry will always be held in high regard.

Nowadays it doesn't really matter with majority of the degrees. You look at lawyers who are struggling to get jobs because law firms are looking for something else in a potential employee, not just your average LLB graduate. All degrees have potential for specialising into a greater field, if the person can be arsed trying that is. Your degree will make up half, its your character and persona that makes up the other half....

but when it comes to asians, dentistry, medicine and law are always on the top of the list (not belittling anyones job profession, it just generally is."ooh dentist ooh doctor... right mr ali's son is a dentist, marry him now before someone else does!")

    Mmm yummy...
