Instead of faffing about with Ubuntu (which I doubt will work anyways, as the hard drives have to bet up in slave mode before any back up process), try and get a hard drive caddy. you can get HD caddies for a few quid on eBay these days.
If its a SATA one then get a SATA caddy, if its a IDE HD, then get a IDE caddy.
Once you have the caddy, shove it onto a normal pc or another laptop. Open up your faulty laptop, get out the hard drives, make sure the jumper is set to cable select and stick the hard drive into the caddy.
Now if you did everything properly (which you should have, cos its piss easy. If you managed to fuck it up, you fail life), then when you stick in the hard drive into the caddy, it will come up as an external USB hard drive.
You can now safely get all your files off it and onto the working hard drive.
